The Tanzanian government has invited the opposition for dialogue following a wave of deadly post-election violence that has shaken the country and drawn the interest of the international community concerning democratic freedoms.

The situation of governance and civil liberties in the most populous country in East Africa has raised concerns among human rights organizations, which have called on the government to guard the basic freedoms as tensions keep escalating.

The negotiation request is only a day after the arrest of CHADEMA Secretary General Amani Golugwa, as the government continues to crack down on people alleged to have been involved in post-election demonstrations.

President Signals Shift Towards Reconciliation

Nearly a week after her inauguration, which took place at a military parade ground rather than the traditional stadium in Dar es Salaam, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has signaled a shift toward reconciliation in an effort to calm political unrest and restore national unity.

“It is President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s intention to ensure that we begin a process of reconciliation, so that even the minority can be heard, building a nation of peace, unity, and stability that continues to serve as a model of Africa and the world,” said Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, who spoke to the media in Dar es Salaam.

Global Fears about the Space of Democracy

The administration’s appeal for calm comes amid international criticism of censorship of the press and a narrowing of democratic space following controversial elections held last month.

Analysts believe that the government is also trying to rebuild investor confidence, which suffered in the aftermath of President Suluhu’s near-unanimous victory that caused massive protests.

Vice President Nchimbi added,” President Samia Suluhu has asked me to assure you that our country remains safe, stable, and open to visitors around the world.”

Tanzania Faces Test of Legitimacy

Once considered an island of peace in a politically fragile region, Tanzania now faces a crucial legitimacy challenge, with only a few leaders in the area attending Suluhu’s inauguration.

Her administration is under pressure both domestically and internationally to restore the country’s democratic credentials. Also Read:Govt Moves to Protect Kenyans in Tanzania Following Election Protests

“I want to assure you that the President is committed to ensuring Tanzania’s continued peace and development,” Nchimbi said.
