A court has sentenced a man to death after finding him guilty of violently attacking and robbing the mother of former Member of Parliament Charles Kilonzo in what the court described as a “vicious and heartless” assault.
The convict, Josephat Mutuku Kasyema, was found guilty of attacking Agnes Njeri Kilonzo, 80, at her home in the Ndarani area of Yatta Sub-County, Machakos, on December 8, 2023.
According to court records, Kasyema struck the elderly woman on the head with a panga before making away with her Samsung Galaxy J2 phone, valued at KSh15,000, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The court heard that after the assault, the accused tied the victim with ropes and abandoned her in her home, leaving her for dead.
She was later rescued by neighbors who rushed her to the hospital. The brutality of the attack, prosecutors said, left the octogenarian unable to speak.

Delivering the ruling, the court described the incident as a chilling reminder of the cruelty that can be inflicted upon the most vulnerable members of society.
The magistrate noted that the evidence presented proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Kasyema intended to cause grievous harm while committing the robbery.
“The court ruled that the attack was so vicious and heartless that it led Agnes to lose the power of speech.”
“The accused person is said to have tied the victim with ropes and left her alone in the house before he was rescued later.”

The case, which drew attention due to the victim’s relation to the former MP, was prosecuted by Fred Nderitu, Lydia Wang’ombe, and James Gachoka, who commended the court for delivering justice to the elderly victim.
The death sentence, though rarely carried out in Kenya, remains the maximum penalty for capital offences such as robbery with violence under the Penal Code.
