A catholic priest has allegedly been abducted in Tanzania for criticizing President Samia Suluhu over mass killings in the country.
Tanzanian activist Maria Saruni alleged that Father Josephat Misigaro has been taken by security forces after his remarks regarding the post-election violence in Tanzania.
Misigaro made the statements during a sermon on November 16, 2025.
“Father Josephat Misigaro, the Parish priest of Nguruka parish in Kigoma, has been abducted! He criticized the government for the Tanzania Massacre last Sunday in his sermons! His whereabouts are unknown,” Saruni said.
“Huyu ni Padre Josephat Misigaro paroio wa Nguruka wilaya ya Uvinza Kigoma ametekwa kwa kile kilichoelezwa kuwa ameponzwa na mahubiri yake jumapili iliyopita.”

However, Tanzanian police were quick to refute claims that Father Josephat Misigaro was abducted along with two civilians named Vedasto and Selule.
The Kigoma Regional Police Chief stated that the reports were misleading, affirming that the three were taken by unidentified individuals.
ACP Philemon Makungu, the Kigoma Regional Police Commander, stated that the Father was summoned on November 20, 2025, for questioning regarding criminal allegations and was released after the interview.

Makungu said no reports have been filed regarding the other two civilians who are said to have disappeared.
He asked any Tanzanian with a missing family member or relative to report to any police station for investigations.
“Concerning Vedasto and Selule, who are also claimed to have been abducted, that information is false because no report has been filed about their disappearance. However, anyone with a missing relative or family member should report to any police station so investigations can be carried out,” the police said.
