The Social Health Authority (SHA) has sent an important message to all teachers across the country.

In a statement on Sunday, November 23, SHA said it has welcomed the new Comprehensive Mwalimu Medical Cover.

SHA has asked all teachers to confirm and update the details of their dependents by dialling *147# or by visiting sha.go.ke, afyayangu.go.ke.

The Authority said the teachers’ scheme will be effective from December 1, 2025.

“Dear Teachers, SHA welcomes you to the new Comprehensive Mwalimu Medical Cover. Please confirm and/or update your dependents by dialling *147# or by visiting sha.go.ke, afyayangu.go.ke. The medical scheme will be active, effective 1st Dec 2025,” SHA said.

Teachers Agree to Join SHA

Teachers’ unions agreed to SHA after a series of consultative meetings with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

TSC Acting Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei announced the activation of a Joint Technical Committee comprising representatives from TSC, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET), the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA), and the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) to oversee the transition and onboarding process.

“The Commission has sensitized all Secretariat and field staff on the proposed transition to SHA to ensure effective communication and support for teachers across the country,” Mitei said.

Improving Welfare of Teachers

She stated that TSC is ready to improve the welfare of teachers through open dialogue and collaboration.

Further, Miteti said the SHA scheme will resolve previous challenges such as limited provider networks, long preauthorization times, and inconsistent service quality.

“This transition will ensure that teachers and their dependents enjoy quality, reliable, and efficient medical services under a harmonized national framework,” she stated.
