Story of Davis Kipleting From Dairy Farm to Nursing Graduate

Share

“My name is Davis Kipleting, a nursing graduand from KMTC Kabarnet, and when I reflect on my journey, one truth stands out .

It has been God from the beginning.”

The story of Davis starts in 2017 when he first sat his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with great expectations, only for life to take an unexpected turn.

Unable to join college, he repeated the exam in 2018, still holding on to a quiet dream of a better future.

After completing his KCSE in 2019, Davis volunteered as an untrained teacher in Eldama Ravine.

He earned nothing, but gained purpose.

“At that time, I knew very little about KMTC. I believed it was some kind of place, a place of the privileged, “he remembers.

This changed after he got a letter of admission to the Dairy Training Institute in Naivasha in September 2019.

His parents borrowed money from a neighbour just to help him enrol.

“I imagined myself treating animals,” he reflects, “not knowing God was preparing me for a different kind of care.”

Difficult Job and a Life-changing encounter

He was not able to graduate until March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after which he secured a job on a small farm in Mogotio.

One afternoon, a friend from KMTC Kakamega spotted him in a dust coat.

“He asked if I was a medic. I laughed and explained to him that I was just a dairy man.”

The friend urged him to apply to KMTC, a recommendation that Davis ignored initially since he thought KMTC only accepted students with “perfect grades.”

But fate soon intervened. One of the cows on the farm got hypocalcemia, and Davis was fired.

He says,” I walked home with tears in my eyes. My mother looked at me and said words I will never forget, ‘Tusikufe moyo’ (let us not lose heart).”

Long Road to KMTC

Encouraged again by his friend in September 2021, Davis used his small savings at a cyber cafe to apply for a Certificate in Nursing.

In March 2022, he received an admission message to KMTC Port Reitz.

“My joy was cut short,” he says. “The reporting date was too soon, and I had no fees.”

To raise money, he worked as a sales agent from March to September 2022.

Some months, he earned a small commission; others, nothing at all.

Yet every day he saw KMTC students during their placements.

“I kept telling myself, one day that will be me. Many laughed, but I held onto the dream.”

When the portal re-opened in March 2023, he once again applied to the intake, and this time, he was admitted to KMTC Kabarnet.

“I cried in the matatu going home, he says. “My Mother cried too and asked,”Do you mean I can have a medic in this house?”

A Community That Carried His Dream

The community and church assisted him in raising the initial KSh 10,000.

He reported to KMTC Kabarnet with support from NG-CDF, savings of his mother, and friends on March 14th, 2023.

At KMTC, Davis was involved in student leadership.

After the 2024-2025 SRC elections, he was appointed Student Affairs Commissioner.

“I served briefly before being dismissed due to internal differences. Even then, I reminded myself why I was in school,” he says.

Victory After the Struggle

Davis took his Final Qualifying Examination in January 2025 and passed.

He later completed his Nursing Council Licensure Exam at Kabarak University.

“Raising the fees was tough, but God sent people who stepped in,” he added.

Today, Davis is a proud person, a former dairy worker who refused to be defined by circumstances.

“To any student or person in a tough season, never doubt yourself because of your current situation. Look ahead and believe in the person you’re becoming,” he says.

From a dusty farm in Mogotio to the wards and classrooms of KMTC, Davis’s journey is a testimony of resilience and grace.

He will graduate as a nurse on December 4, 2025.

“Congratulations to the KMTC Class of 2025. God bless you all.”
