A Pattern Too Loud to Ignore: Gachagua and the Politics of Death Announcements

Share

DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua is facing criticism over what opponents describe as a recurring pattern of insensitive remarks involving death and grief.

Past controversies involving Johana Ng’eno and political exchanges over Raila Odinga’s health have also resurfaced in public debate.

One of the accusations comes from the family of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno. His widow, Naiyanoi Ntutu, has alleged that she learned of her husband’s death through public remarks attributed to Gachagua on social media. She says she did not receive formal communication from the family first.

Speaking during a political address in Emurua Dikirr constituency, while engaging residents ahead of local political campaigns, Naiyanoi said the moment shocked her. She added that it left the family confused and unprepared for the news.

“On that day, he (Gachagua) announced our leader had died…I was in the house waiting for my husband. I couldn’t cry because of the children. I removed them from the house first,” she recalled.

She further described how she first saw the announcement online after speaking to her husband shortly before the news spread.

“The day Johana died, the man stood on a car top to announce our leader had died. I had just spoken to Johana before the announcement. I was in the house waiting for my husband. I then logged onto Facebook and saw his sentiments; was that right?” she said.

Political Appeal to Voters in Emurua Dikirr

She also urged residents of Emurua Dikirr to reject Gachagua’s political camp and support UDA candidates, saying her late husband aligned himself with the party.

Naiyanoi further appealed to women in the constituency not to support Gachagua politically, accusing him of failing to engage the community after Johana’s death.

The remarks have continued to circulate in political discussions, with critics arguing that announcing death before family confirmation, if accurate, reflects poor judgment and insensitivity toward grieving families.

Late Raila Odinga Health Claims Dismissed at Rallies

Earlier, Gachagua was also linked by political opponents to claims that he was spreading narratives about Raila Odinga’s health condition alongside Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. He dismissed the allegations during United Opposition campaign rallies held in Katangi and Kwa-Vonza in Machakos and Kitui counties in 2025.

“How does Raila’s illness relate to Kalonzo or me? Is Kalonzo a bacterium or a virus?” Gachagua asked.

The remark sparked criticism from opponents who said the comparison was inappropriate and trivialised a sensitive issue involving a senior national leader.

Taken together, the incidents have intensified scrutiny on the DCP party leader’s communication style, with critics arguing that his choice of words in matters involving death, illness and mourning often crosses into insensitivity, while supporters maintain his remarks are political responses taken out of context.
