Senate Majority Leader and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of promoting divisive politics and lacking a national outlook.
Speaking during an interview hosted by political analyst Herman Manyora on Nairobi Review, Cheruiyot addressed concerns about tribal politics in Kenya.
He acknowledged that politics often reflects regional interests. However, he insisted that Gachagua’s approach goes beyond that reality.
“Gachagua is too dangerous. The fact that you have somebody with that level of thinking a heartbeat away from the Presidency is too risky. That is why many of us believed in Gachagua’s impeachment because we said you could not have somebody seated at the presidency who sees Kenyans as if they don’t matter” Cheruiyot said.
Cheruiyot then linked the dispute to deeper disagreements within government. He said he and others, including President William Ruto, differed with Gachagua on the idea of national unity. In his view, Gachagua focused too much on ethnic considerations.

At the same time, Cheruiyot pointed to a specific incident to support his claims. He recalled the appointment of Humphrey Wattanga as Director General of the Kenya Revenue Authority. He said the decision angered Gachagua and exposed his thinking.
“I remember so well when this man called Humphrey Wattanga was appointed Director General of KRA. He became so furious and you know the thing with him is that when he is furious, he calls everybody. He says but which taxes do Luhyas pay?”

Cheruiyot stressed that leaders must rise above regional interests. He noted that politics may involve community expectations. Still, he warned against elevating one group above others.
“The minute I begin to see as if my own people are the only ones that matter the rest ones of you doesn’t matter then it becomes a problem,” he said.
Finally, he argued that such sentiments weaken national cohesion. He added that the same pattern continues in Gachagua’s public remarks. As a result, he suggested that such political missteps benefit President Ruto, who faces what he described as unstrategic opponents.
“I don’t think there is enough fools in Kenya to vote for him,” he said.
The remarks add to the ongoing debate on leadership, unity and the role of ethnicity in Kenya’s politics.
