Kenyan filmmaker Abel Mutua has backed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for president, urging Kenyans to judge political leaders by their records rather than the coalitions they belong to.

Speaking about the 2027 General Election, Mutua questioned the tendency of voters to support an entire line-up of candidates because they belong to the same political alliance.

He urged Kenyans to examine each candidate’s performance and leadership record before deciding whom to elect.

“I have no problem with Sifuna. I have a problem with the entire coalition. Because now all of a sudden, we are forgetting that these people have been around. So Sifuna ako sawa. And that’s why even kwa Jeff Koinange nilisema, if I see someone aki-vote, ile six-piece, ile suti, ati because tunaegemea one side, I’ll be very disappointed. Choose a leader. Do not choose a coalition. That is where we go wrong as a country. Choose a leader,” Mutua said.

Why Abel Mutua Backs Edwin Sifuna

Explaining his support for the Nairobi Senator, Mutua pointed to the senator’s work in Senate committees, saying it had convinced him that Sifuna could help address corruption.

“So for me, Sifuna amenionyesha, kwa zile senate committees zake, enyewe, huu ni mtu anaweza tusaidia kukick out hii corruption. So I will give Sifuna hiyo nini ya president. Then nione mtu mwingine hapa kando chini yake na the same party, but tumekuwa na huu mtu hapa three decades, hakuna kitu ya maana amefanya, alafu nampatia ati because ako kwa the same nini na Sifuna? It’s not happening,” he said.

Mutua Signals Support for Independent Candidates

Beyond backing the Senator, Mutua said he was open to supporting independent candidates rather than limiting his choices to politicians running under established parties and coalitions.

Further, he argued that party affiliation alone should not determine a politician’s suitability for office.

“Afadhali nipatie mtu wa independent huko. Mimi nakwambia, sheet yangu ya elections hii round itawashangaza sana. Ni ma-independents tupu juu nimeona mnajificha kwa hizi coalition zenu,” he said.
