The Equitable Party (TEP), led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has announced plans to change its name to Linda Mwananchi Movement, alongside amendments to its constitution, party colours, headquarters and official symbol.

In a public notice, the party outlined the proposed changes following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

“The Equitable Party (TEP) wishes to notify its members and the general public that it intends to carry out the following changes: Change its name to Linda Mwananchi Movement; Change of party constitution; Change of party colours; Change of party headquarters; Change of party symbol,” the notice stated.

The announcement marks another step towards aligning the party’s official identity with the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which Sifuna and his allies have been building ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Equitable Party Moves to Adopt Linda Mwananchi Name

TEP’s unveiling on October 4, 2026, marked a significant development in the group’s efforts to establish a political platform for the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

During the launch, Sifuna took the position of party leader and outlined plans to use the outfit to advance the movement’s political agenda.

Addressing the rebranding plans, the senator explained that the movement intended to adopt its preferred name while retaining TEP as its political vehicle.

He also indicated that the party could keep its existing name if the process encountered further obstacles.

“In the coming days, and as resolved by the principals of Linda Mwananchi, we shall be seeking to rebrand the party to the Linda Mwananchi Movement,” Sifuna said during the launch.

However, Sifuna and his allies had encountered legal and regulatory hurdles in their efforts to establish Linda Mwananchi Movement as a new political party.

They subsequently turned to TEP as an alternative platform for pursuing their political plans ahead of the 2027 General Election.

On October 1, 2026, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal overturned an earlier rejection.

Further, that decision gave the group another route to pursue its preferred political identity through the existing party.

TEP Plans Changes to Its Constitution and Headquarters

Beyond the proposed name change, TEP intends to amend its constitution and adopt new party colours and an official symbol.

However, the public notice does not detail the proposed constitutional amendments or identify the colours and symbol the party plans to adopt.

Additionally, the party intends to relocate its headquarters, although its leadership has not disclosed the proposed location.

The National Executive Committee’s decision follows reports on October 8 that TEP had approved the transition.

The Registrar had also approved changes to the names of TEP officials ahead of the proposed rebranding.

For further information, the party’s national chairperson directed members and the general public to its official website, theequitableparty.org.
