Answers To The Most Common Questions Students Ask About HELB
Share
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has responded to some of the most common questions students ask regarding loan applications, disbursement, repayment, and online services.
One of the most frequently asked questions is: “How do I apply for HELB funding?” According to HELB, first-time applicants are required to register on the student portal using their National ID number or KCSE index number, a valid email address, and a phone number.
Students then complete the application online through the Higher Education Financing portal.
Another common question is: “What documents are required during the application?”
Requirements For HELB Application
HELB says students need their KCPE and KCSE index numbers, passport-size photo, National ID, parents’ ID numbers and contacts, admission letter, and guarantor details.
Students whose parents are deceased are also required to provide death certificates.
Students also often ask: “Can I apply using my phone?” HELB says subsequent applications can be made through the HELB mobile app or by dialing *642#.
The board advises students to use a phone number registered under their own name when accessing these services.

Loan Processing
Another major concern among learners is: “How do I know whether my loan has been processed?”
HELB explains that students can log into the student portal to check their loan application and disbursement status.
The portal also allows beneficiaries to download compliance certificates and repayment statements.
Many graduates also ask: “When am I supposed to start repaying my loan?”

Loan Repayment
According to HELB, repayment begins after completion of studies or once a beneficiary secures employment, depending on the repayment terms issued by the board.
Students have also sought clarification on where to get official updates.
HELB has encouraged learners to rely on information shared through its official website, verified social media pages, and communication channels to avoid misinformation.
The board says it continues to improve digital services to make it easier for students and graduates to access funding information, loan services, and repayment support across the country.
