The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has given students who apply for funding several ways to check their application status without visiting its offices.
In a notice dated September 1, 2026, HELB said students can check their application status through the official Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal, USSD service, and HELB mobile application.
HELB advised students to use the available self-service channels to track their loan applications instead of visiting its offices.
According to the notice, students can log into their accounts through the official HEF portal at www.hef.co.ke to view their application status.

Applicants can also check their loan application status through the HELB USSD code *642# on their mobile phones by following the prompts.
Additionally, HELB said students who have installed the mobile application can use it to check their loan application status instantly.
The notice comes as many students across the country await updates from HELB, with universities and colleges already open and students needing financial support.
HELB provides loans to eligible students pursuing higher education in Kenya and has increasingly shifted its services online to make them more accessible and serve students better.

For now, many students are still waiting for funding from HELB even as universities and colleges are opening for a new financial year. Many of them use the money to pay fees and for upkeep.
