Guacho Claims that Babu Owino left ODM because he fears Oburu and Wanga

Mama Lucy Hospital Board member Calvince Otieno, popularly known as Gaucho, has claimed that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino left the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) because he feared the party’s new leadership would not tolerate his conduct as former party leader Raila Odinga allegedly did.

Speaking during a podcast interview aired on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Gaucho, who said he was once a close friend of Babu Owino, described the legislator as a good person who rose from a humble background.

However, Gaucho claimed that their friendship deteriorated after he frustrated Babu’s alleged plan against Ben Sirkal, whom he identified as Babu’s former schoolmate at the University of Nairobi.

Gaucho Recalls Fallout with Babu Owino

Gaucho also responded to remarks Babu Owino made in a separate podcast with radio presenter Alex Mwakideu, where the MP claimed he had supported Gaucho’s campaign for an MCA seat.

According to Gaucho, Babu’s support was limited to attending campaign events and addressing residents, insisting that he did not contribute financially.

“If someone like Babu comes to campaign on the ground without even giving Ksh10,000, can that really be called campaigning? Jalang’o wasn’t on the ground, but he sent Ksh 60,000. In Mwakideu’s podcast, Babu wanted to make himself look like Raila Odinga,” said Gaucho.

Gaucho claimed he lost the MCA race because he lacked financial resources, alleging that the election was not conducted fairly.

He also dismissed Babu’s assertion that he lost because of pride, insisting that the claim was untrue.

The Mama Lucy Hospital Board member further described Babu as someone who enjoys constant praise and prefers to surround himself with people who do not challenge him.

“Babu doesn’t like people who think for themselves. He prefers people who simply praise him. Every morning it’s ‘Babu Kwa Sababu’ like a repeated prayer,” Gaucho added.

Gaucho further alleged that Babu relied on university students to promote his image online because they were easier to influence.

Why Gaucho believes Babu left ODM

Gaucho also dismissed claims that Babu Owino secured his ODM ticket through senior party officials. He said the two of them collected their ODM nomination certificates together in the early hours of the morning.

He went on to claim that former ODM leader Raila Odinga often excused Babu’s controversial behavior because he was young. However, Gaucho believes things would have been different under ODM Deputy Party Leader Oburu Odinga and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

“Why did Babu leave ODM? He knows these leaders would not spare him the way Raila Odinga did. Babu has been causing controversy for a long time. Oburu Odinga is not someone you can keep insulting. If it were Raila, he would say, ‘Leave him alone; he’s young and still immature.’ Oburu is different, and Gladys Wanga would not tolerate that.”

Gaucho also claimed that Babu often complained to him about Raila Odinga’s leadership, especially over some of the party’s decisions, including those he believed favored Treasury CS John Mbadi.

He said he encouraged Babu to continue supporting Raila despite those frustrations, but added that he has since left the party himself.

Gaucho further alleged that Babu later fell out with Raila and accused the Embakasi East MP of using him to gather information about Raila’s political plans.

“If Babu Owino were left to lead the Luo community, he would sell them out for his own interests. There is blood on his hands.”

He also claimed that Raila did not want Babu to become the Luo community’s political kingpin because he believed the MP would put his own interests ahead of those of his supporters.
