Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced plans to construct a modern, high-tech garage to relocate Grogon mechanics affected by the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.
Speaking on Monday, July 27 2026, after holding separate meetings with mechanics and Central Business District (CBD) traders, Sakaja said the facility will accommodate up to 1,200 vehicles and provide a more organized and productive working environment.
Although the regeneration works have disrupted businesses, the governor stressed that the project will deliver long-term benefits by restoring the river and transforming the city’s economic landscape.
To ease the transition, Sakaja said the county will develop a fully equipped garage designed to improve efficiency and expand business opportunities.
“We are planning to build a modern facility that will improve your working conditions, grow your businesses, and create more opportunities,” Sakaja said. “The garage will include vehicle showrooms, painting booths, car wash bays, training rooms, clinics, shops, kitchens, and other support facilities to enhance the working environment for mechanics while creating new business opportunities,” he stated.
In addition, he noted that the project forms part of the broader Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, which aims to restore the river, improve environmental conditions, create safer public spaces and unlock economic opportunities along the river corridor.

Sakaja Engages Traders as Costs and Infrastructure Concerns Rise
Meanwhile, Sakaja met CBD traders, who raised concerns about rising import taxes and operational challenges affecting their businesses.
At the same time, traders welcomed ongoing improvements in the CBD, including street paving and enhanced public spaces, saying the upgrades have improved accessibility and boosted business activity.
However, they urged the county to extend similar developments to downtown areas and increase street lighting to enhance security.
In response, Sakaja pledged to address critical infrastructure challenges. He said the county will rehabilitate sections of Luthuli Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Kirinyaga Lane, and Kirinyaga Road to improve accessibility and support business operations.
Further, he committed to constructing and equipping a modern health facility to serve traders and customers operating within market areas.

Drive to Modernize Nairobi Markets
Beyond immediate interventions, Sakaja reiterated his administration’s plan to modernize markets across Nairobi by improving infrastructure, enhancing cleanliness and strengthening security.
“We want our traders to operate in better market spaces where they can sell their products under proper shelters, store their perishable goods safely, and conduct business in a dignified environment. These features will be incorporated into the new markets we are building, including the ongoing reconstruction of Gikomba Market,” he said.
