Bien Aimè Baraza, popularly known as Bien, is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has grown to become one of the most influential voices in East African Music.

Bien was born in 1987 in Nairobi, Kenya, where he spent most of his childhood years.

He went to school at Upper Hill school, where he later met his fellow bandmates Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi.

After completing high school, Bien pursued higher education at the United States International University (USIU) where he studied Journalism and Media Studies and graduated in 2011.

Bien’s Music Journey

Bien’s major breakthrough came in 2005 when he co-founded Sauti Sol alongside Polycarp Otieno, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi.

Within the band Bien stood out as the primary vocalist and also a songwriter.

After Sauti Sol announced their separation in 2023, each of them embarked on a solo music career

Bien had, however, started laying a foundation for his solo career in 2021 when he released his collaborative EP Bald Man Love Better with jazz pianist Aaron Rimbui.

Debut Album

His transition into his solo career was fully realized when he released his debut album in 2023. His album title was Alusa Why Are You Topless.

The album featured several standout tracks, such as My Baby, Too Easy, True Love, and Ma Cherie, and was well-received both locally and internationally.

This also positioned Bien as a global solo artist who is capable of standing independently outside of the band that made him famous.

Beyond music, Bien has also been involved in various creative and entrepreneurial initiatives.

Other Ventures In The Industry

Bien is associated with Sol Generation Records, which supports emerging African talent, as well as other creative and entertainment projects that reflect his interest in building a sustainable music industry.

He has also become increasingly vocal about artists’ rights, fair compensation, and the need for structural reforms in the music and entertainment industry.

In Bien’s personal life, he is married to Chiki Kuruka, a fitness instructor and media personality and is also his manager.

They got married in March 2020 and their relationship shows both personal and professional attributes as Chiki plays a key role in managing his solo career.

Awards

Bien-Aimé Baraza has received significant recognition throughout his career. He is credited as a Grammy-winning songwriter through his contribution to Burna Boy’s Twice As Tall album, which won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album.

With Sauti Sol, he has also earned multiple AFRIMA and MTV Europe Music Awards, reflecting the group’s strong continental and international impact.
