Blow to Drug Syndicates as Meth Worth Millions Seized at JKIA

The seizure of two large shipments of methamphetamine at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is the result of a concerted anti-narcotics campaign, which is a huge step taken to counter international drug trafficking syndicates, according to authorities.

In a press release issued by the Kenya Police Service, the process was carried out using the collaborative efforts of several security departments.

“A multi-agency team spearheaded by the Anti-Narcotics unit has delivered a big blow to drug traffickers following the seizure of two consignments of methamphetamine at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,” KPS stated.

Hidden within Vehicle Components in the First Conveyance

It emerged that the first lot, consisting of 1,730 grams and worth an estimated Ksh 13.8 million, had been concealed for fear of discovery.

These drugs had been concealed inside goods that were claimed to be automotive parts.

The police explained the method by which the smugglers had concealed the drugs.

“The first lot consisted of 1,730 grams worth Ksh 13.8 million that had been expertly concealed inside goods claimed to be pistons of cars at the airport from Tanzania to the Philippines,” Police lamented.

Second Shipment Linked to Juja

Meanwhile, authorities seized a second shipment, which had links to the source within the country.

The second seizure consisted of 1,020 grams of substance, worth around Ksh 8 million.

“In yet another related operation, a second shipment of 1,020 grams, worth Ksh 8 million, originating from Juja, was also seized in transit to the same location,” the police indicated in their statement.

The correlation between the two shipments is now a significant aspect that law enforcement agencies are trying to unravel.

Investigation Underway

The law enforcement agencies are working diligently to dismantle the network involved in the distribution.

Tools for surveillance, forensic examination, and information exchange are being utilized to locate the individuals responsible and their financial transactions.

The police stressed that the investigation was still ongoing, stating that “Investigations are being conducted to locate the individuals involved in the syndicate.”
