Relief as Govt Rolls Out New Malaria Treatment Strategy to Curb Drug Resistance

Kenya has intensified its fight against malaria with a major shift in treatment policy. The Ministry of Health has introduced Multiple First-Line Therapies (MFT), a strategy that uses different antimalarial drugs at the same time to reduce resistance and improve patient outcomes.

The update came during the ongoing World Health Summit Regional Meeting, where experts are focusing on strengthening research capacity to support malaria elimination across Africa.

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, highlighted Kenya’s expanding research and innovation ecosystem.

She pointed to institutions such as the Kenya Medical Research Institute as central to advancing scientific studies.

Focus Shifts to Research and Innovation

She noted that Kenya has the capacity to support clinical research, implementation science, and health innovation. Consequently, the country continues to position itself as a regional leader in malaria response.

“The adoption of MFT marks a significant shift in malaria treatment policy, calling for sustained research, robust monitoring systems and strong collaboration to ensure effective rollout and measurable impact,” she stated.

Push for African-Led Solutions

At the same time, the Ministry is prioritizing African-led research. Officials are working to expand laboratory capacity and strengthen surveillance systems to track malaria trends more effectively.

Muthoni emphasized collaboration across sectors. She called on governments, researchers, and global health partners to deepen cooperation in the fight against malaria.

“The need to strengthen African-led research, expand laboratory and surveillance capacity, and deepen partnerships to accelerate malaria elimination and sustain gains across the region,” she further underscored.

A strategy for Long-Term Impact

The new approach aims to slow drug resistance and extend the lifespan of existing treatments. It also seeks to improve long-term outcomes for patients across the country.

However, success will depend on strong coordination, consistent monitoring and sustained investment in research systems.

Overall, Kenya is aligning policy, research and partnerships to strengthen its malaria response and accelerate efforts to eliminate the disease across Africa.
