Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has warned of enforcement action against individuals who have started reinstalling signage that was previously removed from walkways within the Central Business District (CBD).
In a statement dated June 18, 2026, Mosiria said the county had removed the signage to improve accessibility for pedestrians, enhance order, and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the city.
He said the county has observed the return of the signage on walkways, a move he warned undermines efforts to create a cleaner and more organized city.
“We removed these signages from walkways within the CBD to improve accessibility, order, and the aesthetic beauty of our city. However, we have noted that some individuals have started reinstalling them,” read part of the statement.

In addition, Mosiria cautioned that Nairobi County would not hesitate to take action against individuals who continue to disregard the rules.
“I would like to politely request that those responsible remove them immediately and comply with the existing regulations. Please be advised that we shall be carrying out enforcement against all those who choose to interfere with the aesthetic beauty, order, and accessibility of our city,” Mosiria stated.
He also appealed to residents, traders, and business owners to support the county’s efforts to maintain a clean and orderly capital city.
“Let us all work together to keep Nairobi clean, organized, and beautiful,” he said.
Signage Banned in Nairobi CBD: What You Need to Know
The warning comes amid the ongoing crackdown on illegal signage and structures within Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
In 2025, Nairobi County intensified efforts to improve the appearance of Nairobi’s CBD through environmental clean-up campaigns, enforcement of city regulations, and the removal of structures and items that obstruct public spaces.

During this process, several small businesses, including eateries, clothing outlets, fast food joints, and mobile phone shops, had their signage taken down in an operation the county government called a step toward restoring order and improving the city’s image.
Led by Geoffrey Mosiria, the operation, captured in clips shared online, was carried out by county enforcement officers under heavy security.
Mosiria stated that the businesses affected were cited for failing to comply with licensing and advertising regulations.
“As we sweep and unclog drainage systems in the CBD, all illegal structures blocking our streets and hindering cleaning efforts will be treated as public nuisances under environmental laws. We must reclaim our spaces and make Nairobi clean, safe, and orderly for everyone,” he stated.
According to county regulations, the following types of signage are prohibited within the Nairobi CBD:
- Unapproved advertisements displayed without the necessary permits or approvals.
- Signs hanging across streets that pose safety hazards, unless specifically authorized.
- Advertisements that obstruct traffic visibility, block ventilation, or interfere with essential building exits.
- Obscene or offensive signs, along with flashing, animated, or illuminated advertisements that cause disturbances or pose safety risks.
