Residents in Kisii County carry a church building along a road during a protest over a pastor’s appointment of his daughter as treasurer without consultation

In Kisii County, residents moved an entire church structure across farmland in a bizarre protest against their local pastor.

The locals physically carried the church on Wednesday, June 17, after alleging that the pastor appointed his daughter as treasurer without consulting members.

They claimed the pastor made the appointment unilaterally without holding a public participation forum or seeking consent from the congregation.

Videos and pictures circulating online show dozens of community members hoisting the small corrugated iron church as they walked across several farms.

Unconventional Protest in Kisii Sparks Debate on Corruption and Accountability

The move quickly sparked widespread online reaction as viewers expressed amusement, anger, and incredulity at the sight of an entire church structure being moved through fields on top of numerous people’s heads.

More serious was the discussion about corruption and accountability in public and private sectors of Kenyan life as a commenter aptly put it, “Corruption is deeply rooted in Kenyan Societies.”

Many felt that the protest, however unconventional, was a legitimate expression of discontent with the pastor’s alleged self-serving nature.

However, those involved in the demonstration did not name the church or the pastor, and they did not specify the exact location in Kisii County where the incident occurred.

Public Reaction and Transparency Concerns Surrounding Church leadership in Kenya

“The people ok Kisii community felt the need to go a step further in registering their displeasure; for ‘Justice served hot’.” @Natalie commented.

There was no official statement on the demonstration, nor has any been issued by local government officials, church leaders, or members.

Authorities stated several churches in the country had issues with the respective church members concerning leadership, administration, and accountability of church finances and assets, as many Kenyans on X questioned the transparency of their leaders, reflecting such actions as a form of opposition against such leaders or the perceived unfairness of the situation.
