Ebola Outbreak Turns Deadly as Conflict Destroys Containment Efforts in Congo

Ebola continues to spread in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as escalating conflict in Ituri Province disrupts containment efforts and weakens outbreak response systems, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.
In a statement released on May 27, 2026, by the World Health Organization, the agency described a worsening intersection of armed conflict and disease that continues to overwhelm containment operations.
It noted that the situation now reflects a “catastrophic collision of disease and conflict” that is outpacing response capacity.
Furthermore, WHO stressed that the Ebola Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment, which means responders rely entirely on access to affected communities to stop transmission.
However, ongoing clashes continue to disrupt access routes, displace communities, and increase exposure risks.
“The Ebola Bundibugyo virus has no approved vaccine nor treatment. Stopping this Ebola transmission depends entirely on humanitarian access,” WHO stated.

Ebola Outbreak Intensifies as Contact Tracing Breaks Down Amid Conflict and Displacement
In addition, health teams report that continued insecurity has triggered mass displacement into overcrowded camps, while repeated attacks on health facilities continue to undermine surveillance, contact tracing and isolation efforts across affected areas.
As fighting escalates, containment systems continue to deteriorate.
Consequently, exposed individuals move across insecure zones into overcrowded settlements where monitoring becomes extremely difficult.
WHO warns that this breakdown significantly increases transmission risk and reduces the effectiveness of outbreak control efforts.
At the same time, frontline workers continue to operate under dangerous conditions, struggling to track contacts and maintain essential public health interventions.
“We cannot build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling,” the WHO warned.

WHO Calls for Ceasefire
Against this backdrop, the agency urges all warring parties to immediately halt hostilities to restore safe access for medical teams and strengthen containment operations.
“We urge all warring parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire to contain this outbreak. To allow us safe and sustained access for medical teams,” WHO emphasized.
Finally, the agency appealed for prioritization of human survival as violence continues to obstruct response efforts.
Health experts warned that unless access improves quickly, the outbreak could spread further into already vulnerable displaced populations across eastern DRC.
