Former Churchill Show comedian Gilbert Baraza, popularly known as Mtumishi, has opened up about how he supported his former wife through university and helped her secure a well-paying job, only for their marriage to later come to an end.
Mtumishi said he met his wife when she had only completed high school. Determined to support her education, he enrolled her at Kabarak University and took care of both her tuition and rent while she pursued her studies.
After she completed university, Mtumishi said he used his connections to help her find employment at an international organisation.
She eventually secured a job that paid her Ksh 80,000 per month, giving her a stable career after completing her studies.
When Things Took a Different Turn
Mtumishi said the couple’s circumstances changed as her career progressed while he began experiencing financial difficulties.
According to the comedian, his wife eventually became aware that he was struggling financially and told him she would not support a man.
She subsequently left him and later married another man, leaving Mtumishi to navigate the financial and personal difficulties that followed.

His struggles also came as the entertainment industry was changing, with his work on Churchill Show no longer providing the same opportunities he had enjoyed during the show’s run.
Mtumishi became known to Kenyan audiences through his comedy partnership with Josephat Muchesia, popularly known as Mchungaji.
The pair built a following through their church-inspired comedy, using preaching-style performances to tackle everyday experiences and social issues.
Their act grew beyond regular comedy shows, with the duo performing at major national events, including Mashujaa Day celebrations and the launch of the Standard Gauge Railway.
From Churchill Show to Obinna Studios
As opportunities became harder to come by, Mtumishi said he went through a prolonged period of financial hardship.
His fortunes changed this year after media personality Oga Obinna offered him an opportunity at Obinna Studios.

The comedian has since returned to the entertainment space through Obinna’s digital platforms, taking on work at a time when he was still trying to recover from the financial difficulties he had experienced.
Mtumishi’s career has also extended beyond stand-up comedy. He has worked as an MC and digital content creator and has pursued film-related projects, following years in the industry.
