Former CS Quits Ruto’s UDA Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has exited from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing frustration and humiliation and also announced her bid for the Kilifi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at her Kakuyuni home in Malindi on July 30, 2026, Aisha Jumwa said she repeatedly sought an audience with President William Ruto to address her concerns but failed to get the response she expected.
As a result, she concluded that the party had overlooked her grievances despite her long-standing loyalty.
“After deep reflection, heartfelt prayer, and countless consultation with the people I serve, I have made one of the most difficult decisions of my political life. From today, Aisha Jumwa Karisa Katana is no longer a member of the United Democratic Alliance, UDA,” she said.
Aisha Jumwa Claims Betrayal and Humiliation
Jumwa explained that a series of incidents pushed her to leave the party. Notably, she cited an encounter at State House where she claimed officials denied her access during a meeting involving Coast leaders.
Moreover, she revisited her political journey and emphasized her early support for President Ruto, arguing that she stood by him before he rose to power but now feels side-lined.
“I supported you, campaigned for you across the country, and stood with you before many others. Today, you are the President, yet I feel abandoned and side-lined,” she said.
In addition, Jumwa said repeated attempts to reach the Head of State went unanswered, deepening her sense of isolation within the party.
“I have been humiliated enough, and it has hurt deeply. There were moments I reached out but received no response. At times, it even felt like I was no longer recognised,” she added.
She further claimed that her alleged ejection from State House marked a turning point, ultimately adding on her decision to exit UDA.
Kilifi Governor Bid at the Centre
At the same time, Jumwa linked her frustrations directly to her ambition to run for Kilifi governor. She maintained that she only seeks a fair opportunity to present her candidature to voters.
“I have no problem with the bigger picture, but I want the people of Kilifi to have their democratic right to choose their leader,” she said.

Uncertain Political Future
Following her resignation, Jumwa declared that she will consult widely before announcing her next political move. She stressed that her future decisions will reflect the will of Kilifi residents and the broader Coast region.
“I am no longer a member of UDA. The decisions I make going forward will be guided by the people of Kilifi on where I should stand,” she said.
Additionally, she appealed for political tolerance and personal security as she navigates her next steps.
“My only request is that I be allowed to move freely and make my political choices without fear,” she stated.
