Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has alleged that his driver was shot during violent confrontations that disrupted the Linda Mwananchi movement’s engagements in Nyahururu and Ol Kalou on Sunday, July 12.
According to Kang’ata, the violence began during a church service at AIPCA before spreading to other engagements in Ol Kalou and Nyahururu Town.
He claimed that individuals he described as goons blocked his vehicle, while his driver sustained a gunshot injury during the confrontation and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The governor linked the latest incident to an earlier attack in Kisii, saying the movement had now encountered violence in multiple counties despite conducting what he described as peaceful public engagements.
He maintained that neither he nor members of his team were armed or involved in any unlawful activity during the visits.
“Last week, we were in Kisii at Keumbu market, where we were attacked with stones. Today, we came to Ol Kalou and Nyahururu Town, and once again we faced violence,” Kang’ata said.
Governor Claims Driver Was Shot During Confrontation
He further alleged that his convoy was intercepted before his driver was injured during the chaos.
“We were first attacked while attending a church service at AIPCA. My vehicle was blocked and taken over by goons. During the incident, my driver was injured in what appears to have been a police shooting. He is currently hospitalized with a bullet lodged in his chest. We are still trying to establish whether it is a live bullet or a rubber bullet. At the moment, he is completely immobilized,” Irungu Kang’ata stated.

No official statement had been issued by the police regarding the governor’s allegations, including the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting or the type of ammunition allegedly used.
Claims of Peaceful Political Engagement
Kang’ata insisted that the Linda Mwananchi movement had conducted its activities peacefully and accused those behind the attacks of attempting to intimidate political leaders and supporters exercising their constitutional rights.
“It is very unfortunate because we came here peacefully. We were not carrying any weapons or engaging in any unlawful activity. We were simply talking to people and expressing our views. Yet, the response we received was violence and stone-throwing,” Kang’ata said.
Movement Vows to Continue Activities
Despite the attack, Kang’ata said the Linda Mwananchi movement would not suspend its activities, maintaining that its campaign is founded on peaceful engagement with wananchi.
“I want to assure Kenyans that our movement is peaceful. We do not believe in chaos or fighting anyone. Despite these attacks, we will continue with our mission because we have no alternative. We are only exercising our right to express our views, nothing more,” Kang’ata concluded.
