From Security Guard to First-Class Graduate: Elvas Kipruto’s Inspiring Journey

A security guard has defied the odds to graduate with First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Education in Science (Chemistry and Physics) after balancing night shifts, university studies and student leadership.

In a statement dated Saturday, August 8, 2026,  Elvas Kipruto Tuwei, who studied at Mount Kenya University, revealed that he worked as a security guard while pursuing his university education, taking on night shifts alongside his academic responsibilities.

“From working as a security guard to graduating with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Education Science (Chemistry and Physics). I thank God for enabling me to come this far,” read part of the statement .

He said balancing his work, studies, and role as a student leader was not easy, but he credited God for helping him overcome the challenges and complete his degree.

“Balancing night shifts as a security guard, serving as a student leader and pursuing my studies was not easy,” Tuwei said.

In addition, the security guard attributed part of his academic journey to the support he received from Prof. Phylis Bartoo, MP for Moiben Constituency, who awarded him a scholarship through the NG-CDF Bursary, which greatly supported his university education.

He also expressed gratitude to Kipsangui Boys High School and the people of Kimore for sponsoring his high school education and believing in his potential.

Beyond his academic work, the security guard also served as a student leader at Mount Kenya University.

He thanked the university and its student fraternity for allowing him to serve as MKUSA Secretary General, describing the experience as an honour.

Tuwei Praised for Hard Work and Perseverance 

Tuwei further acknowledged Mocam Security for allowing him to work as a security guard, a job he said enabled him to support his university education while pursuing his degree. 

“Special thanks to Mocam Security for offering me the opportunity to work as a security guard, which enabled me to support my studies,” Tuwei stated.

His story has prompted messages of encouragement from friends and colleagues, who celebrated his achievement and described it as a demonstration of perseverance.

One congratulatory message described him as the textbook definition of hard work, while another praised his achievement as an example of unlocking infinite possibilities.

“ A true definition of unlocking infinite possibilities. Congratulations sir,” Philip Akoma stated.

Additionally, another Kenyan, while congratulating him, said his achievement showed that the effort invested in his studies had been worthwhile.

“Congratulations Elvas the tassel was worth the hassle, on to bigger things,” said Domtilla.
