Gaucho Reveals Surprising Deal Behind His Mama Lucy Board Appointment

Calvince Okoth, also known as Gaucho, a board member at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, has revealed to the public why he took the job, saying his decision was influenced by PS Raymond Omollo.

Speaking during a gathering at Jevanjee Gardens, Gaucho said PS Raymond Omollo told him to take up the job at Mama Lucy Hospital as a board member to build his profile, saying that he could be appointed as a Principal Secretary anywhere,” Gaucho said.

These remarks by Gaucho explain the circumstances that led to his acceptance of the appointment, which had attracted public attention following his inclusion on the hospital’s board.

Gaucho Said People Insulted Him

Gaucho told Bunge La Wananchi members that many people insulted him after his appointment, claiming that he was uneducated for the job, but he said that he is qualified and he deserves the job.

During his address, Gaucho maintained that the board role was presented to him as a stepping stone for future public service responsibilities rather than an end goal in itself.

According to him, Omollo’s advice was that serving on the hospital’s board would strengthen his credentials for higher appointments within government.

He was appointed to the Mama Lucy Hospital Board in April 2026 through a gazette notice that was issued by the Nairobi County Government.

His Appointment

The appointment was made by County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Suzanne Silantoi and took effect on April 16, 2026, and is for a three-year term.

Before joining the hospital board, Gaucho built his profile as a grassroots activist and community mobiliser through the Bunge la Wananchi movement, where he became known for championing social justice issues and advocating for residents in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

He gained national attention during the 2023 cost-of-living protests and has remained an outspoken public figure on governance and youth issues
