Global Panic Grows After Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak

Share

The global health organizations have increased their surveillance measures after the hantavirus outbreak in the expedition cruise ship named MV Hondius, which sailed through various parts of South America and Antarctica on its way to Europe.

There have been at least three fatalities due to this hantavirus outbreak and a number of people infected by this disease.

As per the outbreak update provided by the health authorities, they are monitoring those who have been infected or are suspected of being infected while sailing on board the MV Hondius cruise ship.

The ship left Argentina in April 2026 and proceeded to Antarctica where tourists could enjoy bird-watching before the ship sailed through the South Atlantic to reach Tenerife in Spain.

Investigators are examining whether passengers may have been exposed to rodents or contaminated environments during activities in Argentina linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus.

The outbreak has drawn international attention because the ship carried approximately 147 to 149 passengers and crew members from 23 countries.

What Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is described as a rare virus mainly linked to rodents and rodent-contaminated environments.

This viral infection can result in serious respiratory infections such as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).

Certain hantaviruses are highly lethal, but the incidence of the disease is relatively rare worldwide.

The Andes strain, which is found in parts of South America, is of particular concern because it is one of the few hantavirus strains that can rarely spread between people through prolonged close contact.

Its transmission remains limited and does not resemble the rapid community spread associated with COVID-19.

Health agencies currently do not consider the outbreak a “COVID-like pandemic threat” and maintain that the overall public risk remains low.

Human infections usually occur after exposure to infected rodents, their urine, droppings, or saliva.

Health authorities are now trying to establish whether any passengers came into contact with contaminated areas during excursions in Argentina before boarding or during the expedition itself.

Timeline of the Outbreak

The ship MV Hondius left Argentina in the month of April 2026 at the beginning of its journey route towards Antarctica.

As reported by many of the passengers during the late April part of their journey, passengers engaged themselves in outside excursions such as wildlife watching and bird watching activities.

On May 3-5, some of the passengers aboard suffered from respiratory problems.

The passengers aboard started suffering from respiratory illness during their journey from South Atlantic to Tenerife, Spain.

On May 5 and May 6, three people died because of the disease spread during their travel in the ship.

The ship was put under health protocols.

Some medical evacuation procedures were followed in the ship.

On May 6-7, different governments started tracing those people who came back after travelling in this ship.

Nations Addressing The Outbreak

A number of nations have launched monitoring and response actions in relation to the outbreak.

Some of the nations that are undertaking surveillance and tracing operations include the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, the US, and Argentina.

The public health experts’ main concern is to find out travelers who have contracted the illness after getting back from the journey.

There are also screening operations taking place at ports, airports, and hospitals.

Health organizations have been collaborating in the exchange of information about passengers, their travel histories, and test results to check for any secondary infection outside the ship.

There is also an investigation into the situation on board, including ventilation, contact between the passengers, and excursions on the ship.
