Gor Mahia FC’s Head-to-Head Record Against Egyptian Clubs Ahead of Pyramids Clash

Gor Mahia will return to the CAF Champions League on Sunday, September 6, when they host Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC in the first leg of the first qualifying round at Nyayo National Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM EAT, with the return leg set for September 13 in Cairo.

The match presents another difficult test for the Kenyan champions, who have historically struggled against Egyptian opposition in CAF competitions.

Gor Mahia FC’s Record Against Egyptian Clubs

Gor Mahia have faced Egyptian clubs 13 times in CAF competitions, recording two wins, three draws and eight defeats.

The Kenyan giants have scored nine goals and conceded 27 in those matches.

At home in Nairobi, Gor Mahia have a record of two wins, three draws and one defeat from six matches, scoring seven goals and conceding seven.

However, their record in Egypt is much tougher. They have lost all seven of their away matches against Egyptian opposition, scoring only two goals while conceding 20.Gor Mahia have also never eliminated an Egyptian club in a two-legged CAF tie.

Difficult History in Egypt

Gor Mahia’s first recorded meeting with an Egyptian club came in 1969 against Ismaily in the African Cup of Champions Clubs.They drew 1-1 at home before losing 3-1 away in Egypt.

In 1984, Gor Mahia faced Zamalek in the same competition and suffered a 1-0 away defeat in a match that was permanently abandoned.

The two sides met again in the 1994 CAF Cup. Gor Mahia drew 1-1 in Nairobi but lost 2-1 in Cairo.

Their most memorable home victory against Zamalek came in 1998. Gor Mahia won 1-0 in Nairobi in the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup but could not maintain the advantage, losing 4-0 in the return leg in Cairo.

Modern Encounters

Gor Mahia also faced ENPPI in the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup.The Kenyan side lost 3-0 in Cairo before holding the Egyptian club to a goalless draw in Nairobi.

In the 2018-19 CAF Confederation Cup group stage, Gor Mahia produced one of their best performances against Egyptian opposition when they defeated Zamalek 4-2 at Kasarani Stadium.

However, they again found the away fixture difficult, losing 4-0 in Egypt.Their most recent meeting with an Egyptian side came against Al Ahly in the 2024-25 CAF Champions League.

Al Ahly won both legs 3-0, eliminating Gor Mahia 6-0 on aggregate.

Pyramids Present Another Major Test

Gor Mahia will now face Pyramids FC, another Egyptian club with a strong continental pedigree.Pyramids won their maiden CAF Champions League title in 2025 after defeating South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate in the final.

Their arrival in Nairobi therefore gives Gor Mahia another opportunity to challenge one of Egypt’s leading continental clubs.

Head coach Charles Akonnor has urged his players to use the occasion to demonstrate their quality.

“It is a moment for our players to show exactly what they are made of and we believe that this is not a normal match and it’s beyond a league match because it’s an international game. It is also important for our players to do well knowing that the national team coaches are also watching,” said Akonnor.

Pyramids are expected to arrive in Nairobi on Thursday, September 3, ahead of Sunday’s encounter.

Kogalo FC Confident Despite History

Gor Mahia captain Shariff Musa said the players are motivated by the quality of the opposition and understand the importance of the fixture.

“The players are excited and focused on the match because of the kind of opponent that is coming. So the mood is right and it’s very important to have that mood going towards a game of this magnitude,” said Musa.

Team manager Philemon Otieno has also expressed confidence in Gor Mahia’s ability to compete and collect maximum points at home.The squad has been strengthened with several new arrivals.

Goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi joined from AFC Leopards, while Michael Onyango arrived from Equity FC. They will compete with retained goalkeeper Bryne Omondi.

In defence, Gor Mahia will rely on players including Mike Kibwage and Paul Ochuoga, alongside new Ghanaian signing Ebenezer Ocran.

Captain Musa will lead the midfield, with new signing Portipher Odhiambo adding further options after joining from Kakamega Homeboyz.

The attack features high-profile arrivals Denis Omedi from Kitara and Paul Okoth, last season’s SportPesa League Golden Boot runner-up, alongside Hansel Ochieng’.
