Kenya Railways Issues Stern Warning Over Railway Vandalism

Kenya Railways has warned members of the public against vandalising railway property, cautioning that those who endanger passengers could face life imprisonment.

According to a notice dated September 5, Kenya Railways said railway vandalism is a criminal offence and urged the public to help protect railway infrastructure and report any cases to the relevant authorities.

Kenya Railways cited Section 233(e) of the Penal Code, which makes it an offence to deliberately endanger the safety of people travelling by railway.

“We wish to notify the public that vandalism of railway property is a crime punishable by law under Penal Code 233 (e) which states that: “Any person who, with intent to injure or to endanger the safety of any person travelling by any railway, whether a particular person or not,” read part of the notice.

Kenya Railways Urges Public to Report Vandalism

Under the law, anyone who causes the safety of railway passengers to be endangered through an act or omission, with the intention of causing injury or danger, commits a felony and may be sentenced to life imprisonment.

In addition, Kenya Railways highlighted the serious consequences associated with tampering with railway infrastructure, particularly where such actions could put passengers at risk.

It also said the safety of its passengers remains its top priority and called on members of the public to report suspected cases of vandalism.

The public can report railway vandalism to law enforcement authorities or contact Kenya Railways through its hotline on 0711 777 577.

Kenya Railways further encouraged the public to remain vigilant and assist authorities in preventing acts that could compromise railway operations and passenger safety.

Suspected Railway Vandal Arrested

The warning comes as Kenya Railways continues to take action against suspected cases of railway vandalism along its network.

Kenya Railways said its security teams, together with police officers and members of the surrounding community, arrested a suspected vandal at K375 between Sultan and Lesonkoyo Standard Gauge Railway passing stations.

The suspect was arrested after closed-circuit television footage detected an intrusion along the railway corridor.

Following preliminary investigations ,the suspect was vandalising copper earthing wires and could be linked to other similar incidents along the railway corridor.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue and authorities consider further legal action.
