Govt Announces Special Holiday on Monday; Here is Why

The Rwandan government has announced that Monday, August 17, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Public Service and Labour in a notice addressed to employers and employees in both the public and private sectors on August 13.

The decision means workers in Rwanda will have an additional day off next week, with the holiday coming immediately after the weekend.

The ministry explained that the decision is linked to Assumption Day, which falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Since the public holiday falls on a weekend, the government will observe it on the following working day, Monday, August 17.

“The Ministry of Public Service and Labour informs all employers and employees in both public and private sectors that, since the celebration of Assumption Day on Saturday, 15 August 2026, coincides with the weekend, Monday, 17 August 2026, will be observed as a public holiday,” the ministry said.

Rwanda’s official rules provide that when a public holiday, other than the April 7 Genocide Against the Tutsi Memorial Day, falls on a weekend, the following working day becomes a public holiday.

Assumption Day Holiday Falls on Saturday

Assumption Day is observed every year on August 15. In 2026, the day falls on a Saturday.

The holiday commemorates the Christian belief in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven and is recognised as a public holiday in Rwanda. Rwanda’s government holiday calendar lists August 15 as Assumption Day.

Because August 15 falls on Saturday this year, workers will instead observe the holiday on Monday.

The 2026 holiday calendar also lists August 17 as the observed date for Assumption Day.

Who Will Get the Day Off?

The announcement applies to employees and employers in both the public and private sectors.

This means eligible workers across the two sectors will observe Monday, August 17, as a public holiday.

The arrangement effectively gives workers a three-day break from Saturday, August 15, through Monday, August 17, although individual workplaces and essential services may operate according to their arrangements.

Rwanda Has Used the Same Rule Before

The decision is not a new policy introduced specifically for 2026.

Rwanda’s public holiday regulations state that when an official public holiday coincides with a weekend, the following working day becomes a public holiday. The rule applies to both public and private-sector employees.

The same arrangement can be seen in Rwanda’s 2026 holiday calendar, where Liberation Day, which falls on Saturday, July 4, is followed by an observed public holiday on Monday, July 6.

Normal working activities will resume on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
