The government has denied the validity of a notice that went viral and stated the NYOTA project will start paying beneficiaries KSh 25,000 startup capital on Monday, May 11.
This claim has been rubbished as a hoax by MSMEs PS Susan Mang’eni, who advised beneficiaries to disregard the message on Sunday, May 10.
“Ignore such purported update circulating on NYOTA start-up capital disbursement. We shall communicate officially in the coming days on when the disbursement will take place,” Mang’eni said in a statement.
The fake notice, presented as a media dispatch, asserted that beneficiaries completed a mandatory two-day classroom business training and that phase two disbursement would be disbursed from Monday.
“This is to inform our esteemed NYOTA beneficiaries that the ministry has not communicated such information. It did not originate from our programme,” the MSMEs PS clarified, adding that beneficiaries should await official communication.
She assured beneficiaries that official communication on the next course of action shall be shared via authenticated channels.
“In the meantime, we encourage our NYOTA business support beneficiaries to continue building their businesses and sharing their success stories,” Mang’eni urged.
The training beneficiaries who had already received the initial tranche of Ksh 25,000 will each receive an additional Ksh 25,000 upon the completion of training, pushing their total release to over Ksh 33 billion.
Beneficiaries receive Ksh 22,000 directly and Ksh 3,000 in the National Social Security Fund’s Haba Haba Scheme as savings.

To increase the rate of success in the programme, county governments approved a two-year waiver of business license fees for beneficiaries of the NYOTA business support program.
Mang’eni cautioned beneficiaries against believing unverified updates being shared on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, explaining that fraud is common during high-interest programs, which fraudsters use to lure youth.

Beneficiaries are advised to follow the State Department for MSMEs on their social media platforms and websites for updates.
The officials failed to provide dates on when the disbursement will be made, but confirmed that training is ongoing in all counties.
