Four suspects have been arrested in Nairobi after allegedly being part of a group of about 30 people that visited businesses operated by foreign nationals in Nyamakima on September 7, 2026, demanding money under threats of closure.
At one of the shops, the group allegedly demanded to inspect the company’s business permit, KRA compliance certificate and directors’ details.
The group reportedly ordered the immediate closure of the premises over the alleged lack of the documents or demanded Ksh300,000 to allow the business to continue operating.
They later proceeded to an electrical appliances outlet, where another Ksh200,000 was allegedly demanded.
The incidents were reported to police, prompting an intervention that led to the arrest of the four suspects, who remain in custody pending arraignment.
Investigations widen after arrests
Investigators believe the suspects were part of a wider group allegedly operating under the name of the Nyamakima Business Community.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the group was led by an alleged ringleader, who is among those arrested. Officers are now working to establish how extensive the operation was and whether other people were involved.
The arrests came shortly after the reported incidents, with the suspects being held as police complete processing ahead of their arraignment.
Investigations are expected to establish whether similar incidents had been reported elsewhere and determine the roles played by other members of the group.
The DCI has also warned members of the public against taking enforcement into their own hands, particularly through threats or intimidation aimed at obtaining money from members of the public.

“Such conduct will be met with firm and decisive action in accordance with the law,” the agency said.
Investigations into the alleged extortion scheme remain ongoing as authorities seek to identify any other people who may have been involved.
