Aston Villa have not only ended their long wait for a major European trophy, but they may also change the race for UEFA Champions League qualification in the Premier League.

Villa defeated German side Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night, May,20,2026 to lift their first European trophy since 1982 and their first major silverware since 2001.

The victory also gave manager Unai Emery his fifth Europa League title, further strengthening his reputation as one of the competition’s greatest coaches.

Villa’s Europa League success means England could have six teams in next season’s Champions League.

Earlier this season, the Premier League secured an extra Champions League place through UEFA’s European Performance Spot system because English clubs performed strongly in European competitions.

This paved the way for the top five Premier League teams to qualify for the Champions League.

However, Villa’s Europa League win has created another possible route for a sixth team.

The situation now depends on where Aston Villa finish in the Premier League table after the final round of matches.

What happens if Aston Villa finishes fourth?

If Villa remain in fourth place, they will qualify for the Champions League through their league position.

In that case, the extra Champions League place earned by winning the Europa League will not be passed down to another English club.

That means:

  • The top five teams qualify for the Champions League
  • Sixth place qualifies for the Europa League
  • Seventh or eighth could qualify for the UEFA Conference League, depending on domestic cup results

At the moment, Villa are fourth in the table.

What happens if Villa finish fifth?

This is the scenario many Premier League clubs will be watching closely.

If Aston Villa drops to fifth place while already holding a Champions League spot through their Europa League title, the extra European Performance Spot would move down to the team finishing sixth.

That would allow six Premier League clubs to play in next season’s Champions League.

As things stand, AFC Bournemouth are currently sixth and could benefit most from this situation.

How can Villa drop to fifth place?

Aston Villa will finish fifth if:

  • They lose to Manchester City on the final day
  • Liverpool FC beat Brentford

Both teams would then finish level on points, but Liverpool would move above Villa because of a better goal difference.

That outcome would open the door for the sixth-placed Premier League side to qualify for the Champions League.

Bournemouth and Brighton Still in the Mix

Bournemouth currently sit sixth on 56 points, ahead of their final match against Nottingham Forest.

However, Brighton & Hove Albion are still mathematically in the race. Brighton are three points behind Bournemouth and have a superior goal difference.

A win over Manchester United on the final day could give Brighton a chance to snatch sixth place if Bournemouth fail to win.

Emery continues Europa League dominance

Aston Villa’s triumph also marked another historic achievement for Emery.

The Spanish coach has now won the Europa League five times, having previously lifted the trophy with Sevilla FC and Villarreal CF.
