EATGDA CEO Denies Bribe Claims Over Fuel Strike U-turn

CEO of the East Africa Tour Guides and Drivers Association, Kennedy Kaunda, denied that transport leaders received a ‘brown envelope’ to cancel the strike they called over the fuel prices.
Kennedy stated that EATGDA cancelled the planned strike in good faith after they engaged the government in talks for seven days with no results.
‘Whether the brown envelope was given to me or anybody else, I have not seen the envelope.” Kaunda said.
The claims emerged immediately after EATGDA’s announcement to call off the strike, as messages began circulating on social media accusing sector leaders of accepting bribes to stand down, sparking uproar from the public.

The Struggles of Motorists and Commuters Due to High Fuel Prices in Kenya
Kaunda stated he was surprised when people accused him, as he was on his rounds in Nairobi.
“Today, as I was walking in the streets, Kenyans are crying, so many motorists approached me asking for the brown envelope, I almost ran away from the street,” he said.
According to Kennedy, pressure is on both operators and commuters due to high fuel prices.
He said the near-empty matatus he noticed prove that even commuters can no longer afford normal travel.
‘The commuters are crying. Even when you look at the vehicles, they are empty…They are going to town and coming out of town empty.” Kennedy stated.
The Impact of Rising Fuel Prices on Kenya’s Transport Sector
Authorities stated the intended strike was to protest the increasing fuel prices that have heavily affected the drivers, tour guides, and commuters of all areas of the country.
He insisted that another strike would have a serious impact since the peak tourism season is around the corner and warned that the sector is at stake if a strike is initiated.
He advised that the government needed to solve the issue of pricing before further implications arose.
“These operators are suffering; commuters are not travelling as a result of this,” Kaunda stated.
Government officials present at the meeting with EATGDA, such as Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi and Transport CS Davis Chirchir, have not yet commented on the accusations leveled against the leaders of the transport sector.
