DCI Breaks Silence on Death of Missing KFS Manager Esther Keige

Plot or perfect crime? Detectives say a seemingly ordinary bank withdrawal exposed an alleged conspiracy to kill a wealthy businessman and inherit his fortune.

Rose Adhiambo was a Kenyan business executive and the Managing Director of one of the private security companies owned by her husband, Polycarp Okumu Ocholla.

Polycarp, popularly known as “Kamili,” was among the Coast region’s most successful businessmen.

He built a thriving multi-million-dollar private security empire and invested heavily in real estate and commercial property.

His wealth earned him influence within Mombasa’s business community.

The couple lived in Beach Road Estate in Nyali, one of Mombasa’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

Their luxurious mansion reflected their high financial status.

They employed several domestic workers, including house help Doris Akinyi.

Professionally, Polycarp entrusted Rose with the leadership of one of his security companies.

Together, they appeared to be one of Mombasa’s most influential corporate couples.

However, that public image gradually began to crumble.

According to investigators, the couple’s marriage became increasingly strained over time.

They constantly argued, had financial misunderstandings, and lacked trust amongst each other.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) claimed Rose believed her husband exercised excessive control over their finances despite her senior position in the company.

They further alleged that she feared losing both her executive role and her affluent lifestyle if the marriage ended in divorce.

Consequently, investigators concluded that Rose allegedly devised a plan to secure control of her husband’s estate before any separation could occur.

Prosecutors claimed she intended to inherit his businesses, properties, and other financial assets.

The Plot Plan

Court documents further alleged that an earlier attempt to secretly administer a harmful substance to Polycarp at their Nyali home in October 2015 had failed.

Investigators therefore believed the alleged plot shifted to another plan between October 20 and 26 in the year 2015.

According to the prosecution, Rose allegedly enlisted the help of house help Doris Akinyi in the plan.

Investigators claimed Doris coordinated communication with individuals from Kisumu.

Several suspects (the individuals) reportedly traveled to Mombasa and stayed in Nyali while awaiting instructions.

Police also alleged that Debra Otigo, who operated a local security company, provided them with accommodation.

Meanwhile, investigators identified James Odhiambo Wanyumba as the one recruited to execute the plan together with others.

Police claimed he demanded full payment of Ksh 1.2 million before carrying out his assignment.

Since the cash was unavailable at home, investigators alleged that Rose went to the KCB Naivas Branch in Nyali to withdraw the money from one of the company’s bank accounts.

The plot Twist

Unknown to her, Polycarp had reportedly received information that unfamiliar individuals connected to the alleged plan had arrived in Mombasa.

Instead of confronting his wife, he informed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Detectives then coordinated with the bank and planned a controlled operation.

When Rose initiated the withdrawal, the banking system alerted Polycarp because the transaction required additional authorization.

Detectives treated the notification as their operational signal.

Bank staff delayed releasing the cash while detectives moved into position.

During the delay, investigators alleged that Rose communicated with other suspects as they awaited the money.

Shortly afterward, detectives entered the banking hall and arrested Rose before the money was released.

They then widened the operation.

Police arrested Doris Akinyi for her alleged role in coordinating communication.

Detectives also arrested Debra Otigo for knowingly providing accommodation to the criminals.

Meanwhile, James Odhiambo Wanyumba fled Mombasa after learning the payment had failed.

However, detectives tracked him to Rangwe in Homa Bay County and arrested him.

The arrests led to a high-profile criminal trial that attracted national attention because of the family’s wealth and prominence.

During the proceedings, prosecutors argued that the accused had conspired to eliminate Polycarp in exchange for financial gain.
