How Kenyans Can Retrieve Lost KRA PIN Using a Mobile Phone
Share
Kenyans can now retrieve a lost KRA PIN using their mobile phones through a new USSD service introduced by the Kenya Revenue Authority.
The service allows taxpayers to recover their PIN details without visiting KRA offices or using internet access.
For years, losing a KRA PIN often forced many people to search through old emails, documents, and screenshots before eventually queuing at KRA offices for assistance.
However, KRA says the process has now been simplified through the 2225# USSD code.
“Now your PIN is one USSD away using 2225#, no internet needed, and no office visit,” KRA stated.
How the KRA PIN Retrieval Service Works
To begin the process, users are required to dial *222*5# on their mobile phones, and a menu will appear, where they should select “9 – Other Services.”
Under the Other Services menu, users are instructed to choose “3 – PIN Retrieval.”
Step 3: Select Taxpayer Type
After selecting PIN retrieval, the system prompts users to identify their taxpayer category.
Kenyans are required to select “1 – Kenyan” before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4: Enter ID Number
Users will then be asked to enter their Kenyan National ID number.
Once the information is submitted successfully, the system automatically sends a message containing the taxpayer’s KRA PIN details.
Importance of the Kenya Revenue Authority’s PIN
KRA Pin serves as a unique identifier for taxpayers and is essential for filing tax returns, opening bank accounts, applying for loans, and conducting business transactions.
Without a KRA PIN, individuals and businesses face limitations in accessing many formal economic services, which can hinder their financial growth and opportunities.
Beyond facilitating tax compliance, the KRA PIN plays a vital role in the government’s efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in revenue collection.

By linking all taxable transactions to a unique PIN, the Kenya Revenue Authority can better track income, prevent tax evasion, and promote fair tax administration.
This system ultimately contributes to the country’s economic development by helping the government mobilize resources needed for public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
KRA PIN is mandatory for various official processes, including securing employment, registering properties, and bidding for government contracts.
It not only helps individuals and businesses stay on the right side of the law but also builds credibility and trustworthiness in their dealings.
