How to Reactivate an Old Safaricom Line From Home

Customers looking to reactivate old Safaricom line numbers can now recreate their inactive SIM cards from home using an active Safaricom line.

The process allows eligible customers to regain access to their previous numbers without visiting a Safaricom shop.

Safaricom provides the service through a USSD option and requires customers to have the serial number of the old SIM card.

“You can quickly reactivate your old, inactive Safaricom line right from home by dialling 1002# on an active Safaricom line and following the prompts to recreate the old SIM, provided you still have the old SIM’s serial number,” Safaricom said in a statement on X.

How to Reactivate Old Safaricom Line

To reactivate old Safaricom line, customers should follow these steps:

  • Use an active Safaricom line.
  • Dial *100*2#.
  • Select the option to recreate the old SIM.
  • Follow the instructions displayed on the phone.
  • Provide the required details, including the old SIM’s serial number.
  • Complete the request and wait for confirmation from Safaricom.

Therefore, customers who want to reactivate old Safaricom line can start the process from home instead of travelling to a physical shop.

What to Do After Recreating the SIM

After successfully recreating the SIM, customers should keep using the line. Safaricom advises customers to top up the recreated line within seven days.

Customers can also make calls, send SMS, use mobile data, load airtime or carry out M-Pesa transactions. These activities help maintain usage of the line after customers reactivate old Safaricom line numbers.

Why Safaricom Lines Become Inactive

Prolonged inactivity can cause customers to lose access to old Safaricom numbers. A customer who stops making calls, sending SMS, using data or recharging airtime for an extended period may eventually have the account expire.

Safaricom’s Conditions of Use recognise activities such as chargeable outgoing calls, chargeable SMS, data services and account recharges as forms of use. The company also includes M-Pesa and other Safaricom services.

Customers who recreate old Safaricom line numbers should therefore continue using the service instead of leaving the line dormant for long periods.

When Does a Safaricom Line Expire?

Safaricom states that an account expires when it remains inactive for 120 days after the validity period of the customer’s last recharge ends.

After expiry, Safaricom may deactivate and recycle the number under its terms. If the company has already recycled and reassigned the number, the original customer may no longer be able to recover it.

Customers can therefore use *100*2# to check whether they can reactivate old Safaricom line numbers that have become inactive, provided they have the required old SIM serial number.
