How to Register a Sole Proprietorship in Kenya on eCitizen

Registering a sole proprietorship in Kenya is done entirely online through the eCitizen Business Registration Service (BRS) portal.
According to BRS , the registration process takes between 3-7 business days and costs Ksh 950, making it one of the simplest and most affordable ways to start a business in Kenya.
To start the application,business owners should have at least three preferred business names in order of preference, National Identification Card or passport, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificate, physical business address, including the county, town, street, building and plot number,postal address and recent digital passport-sized photograph.
These documents helps to ensure the application process is smooth and fast.
How to Register a Sole Proprietorship Business in Kenya Online
For the registration to start, business owners are required to log into their eCitizen account as those without an account proceeds to create one using their National ID before verifying their email address.
Once logged in, they should access the Business Registration Service (BRS) dashboard and select “Make Application”, followed by Business Name Registration.

They will then be required to submit between one and three proposed business names for approval where the BRS will confirm if the names are unique and available.
This process takes about 1- 2 days and once approved, the selected business name is reserved for 30 days.
Step 2: Complete the Registration Process
After receiving name approval, business owners proceeds with the registration by filling in the proprietor’s details.
During this stage, they will be required to provide KRA PIN, physical and postal addresses, and the nature of the business as well as uploading copies of their National ID together with a passport-sized photograph .
Step 3 : Registration Fee and Processing Time
To ensure a complete process, enterpreneurrs will be required to pay Ksh 950 directly on the eCitizen platform using M-PESA, Visa, or Mastercard for the registratiuon and the BRS proceeds to reviews the application.

Although the entire process may take up to seven days, this review process takes three to five business days.
Step 4: Download Your Registration Certificate
After the application has been approved, a notification is sent through the eCitizen portal and the business owners can then download their Certificate of Registration, which officially confirms that the sole proprietorship has been registered.
This certificate enables entrepreneurs to legally operate their businesses under the registered business name.
