EACC Arrests Immigration Official Over Alleged Passport Bribery

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Moses Karima Chandugu, an employee of the State Department for Immigration, Border Control and Citizen Services, over allegations of soliciting a bribe to facilitate the processing of a Kenyan passport.

In a statement dated August 21, EACC stated that Moses was arrested following a complaint filed at the Commission’s Lower Coast Regional Office in Mombasa.

The commission said the complainant alleged that Chandugu demanded money to facilitate early fingerprint processing and speed up the passport application process.

EACC Moves Against Immigration Official Over Alleged Passport Bribe

EACC said preliminary investigations established that the suspect allegedly solicited and agreed to receive Ksh12,000 in connection with the passport application.

The commission mounted an operation that culminated in the suspect’s arrest.

Following his arrest, Moses Chandugu was booked and processed at Central Police Station in Mombasa but was later released on a cash bail of Ksh20,000 pending the completion of investigations.

The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the suspect have not been proven in court.

EACC reiterated its commitment to tackling bribery at public service delivery points and improving the quality of services provided to citizens.

The Commission said it would continue pursuing cases involving corruption and bribery as part of efforts to promote accountability and integrity in public institutions.

Suspect Surrenders Over Alleged Ksh 1.57 Billion Treasury Fraud

This development comes a day after Charles Cheruiyot presented himself to the commission over an alleged Ksh 1.57 billion fraud involving an International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)- funded programme at the National Treasury.

Cheruiyot reported to EACC’s Integrity Centre in Nairobi on Thursday, August 20, for processing ahead of arraignment, after being directed to present himself alongside 10 other suspects.

His appearance came two days after the commission announced the arrest of nine suspects following investigations into alleged fraudulent disbursements under the Rural Outreach of Financial Innovations and Technologies (PROFIT) Programme.

According to EACC, Ksh 1.57 billion was fraudulently disbursed from the National Treasury Development Account to the programme and subsequently channelled to 23 private entities for goods and services that were never supplied or rendered.
