Inside the Rise of Major General John Nkoimo, New Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army

Born in Kilgoris, Narok County, Major General John Maison Nkoimo serves as the Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Over the years, he has built a distinguished military career that spans frontline operations, strategic command and senior leadership roles.
He began his education in Kenya and later joined the military, where he steadily rose through the ranks.
Along the way, he also underwent advanced military training, including reported studies at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, which strengthened his leadership and strategic capabilities.
Nkoimo first gained national recognition during Kenya’s military operations in Somalia.
Around 2011–2012, he served as Lieutenant Colonel and commanded the Southern Sector under the African Union Mission in Somalia.
In this role, he led Kenyan troops in major operations against the Al-Shabaab terror group.
As a result, his forces helped capture strategic locations such as Ras Kiamboni and Bur Gabo, which significantly weakened militant control along the Kenya–Somalia border.
John Maison Nkoimo in Strategic Military Leadership
After his Somalia deployment, he advanced into senior command positions within the Kenya Defence Forces.
He first served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command (CENTCOM), where he oversaw key regional security operations.
He then moved to head the Border Security Command, where he coordinated defence operations along Kenya’s sensitive border areas and strengthened national security response mechanisms.

Appointment as Deputy Commander, Kenya Army
On Friday, June 5, 2026, President William Ruto appointed Major General Nkoimo as the Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army following recommendations by the Defence Council.
In the same reshuffle, he succeeded Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who retired from military service.
At the time of his appointment, he served as the General Officer Commanding Central Command.
Leadership at the Kenya Military Academy
Before this elevation, he served as Commandant of the Kenya Military Academy (KMA).
In that role, he trained and mentored officer cadets, ensuring they developed strong discipline, leadership skills, and operational readiness for military service.
In addition, Major General Nkoimo pursued advanced military education that shaped his strategic thinking.
He also completed training at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, which further enhanced his command expertise.

Legacy
From frontline combat in Somalia to senior leadership within the Kenya Army, Major General John Maison Nkoimo has consistently demonstrated discipline, resilience, and commitment to service.
