Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum Closed for Three Months

The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) has announced the temporary closure of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum to allow construction work at the site.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 11 2026, NMK said the mausoleum was closed to the public on Monday, July 20 2026 and will remain closed for three months up to October 30 2026.

In the three months period of closure tourists and any people are advised not to visit the mausoleum in order to allow for smooth running of the construction.

“The National Museums of Kenya wishes to inform the general public and all our esteemed visitors that the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum has been closed for construction works since Monday, July 20, 2026 until Friday, October 30, 2026,” NMK stated in the notice.

The Late Raila Odinga

The government is putting up a new mausoleum for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga while at the same time renovating the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum.

This mausoleum has served as a site to preserve historical material such as personal belongings, cultural artefacts and other historical materials in Kenya’s political history.

Kenyan government and Raila’s family formally handed over the site on July 20 2026 to mark the transition of the construction of the site as the Kenya Defence Forces is overseeing the construction.

National Museums of Kenya had announced plans to include a research centre, library, digital  archieves and an amphitheatre.

NMK had earlier advertised a tender to cover the construction that is taking place at the site.

Construction and redevelopment of the site is expected to bring together Raila’s history and that of his father’s Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

In addition construction of the project had already begun by July 20 2026 with construction experts saying it will take a period of around 3 months in which it will be closed from the public.

When the facility is done it will be presented as a place that will be able to preserve history and provide a space for research and exhibitions.
