CJ Koome Announces Death of Retired Judge Omondi Tunya

The Judiciary of Kenya is grieving the loss of retired High Court Judge Justice Omondi Tunya, whose illustrious decades-long judicial career played an important role in the development of the administration of justice in the country under the leadership of Chief Justice of Kenya Martha Koome.

In her condolence message addressed to the family of the deceased on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, Koome expressed condolences on the demise of Justice Omondi Tunya, whose death was a great loss to the Kenyan legal fraternity, his family, and all his former colleagues.

Judiciary of Kenya stated that Justice Omondi Tunya made tremendous contributions to the rule of law and administration of justice, which would forever be part of his legacy in view of the many years he devoted himself to the growth of the judicial system of Kenya through commitment, diligence and professionalism.

“It is with great sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya,” the Judiciary stated.

Chief Justice Leads National Tribute

Chief Justice Koome conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Judiciary, recognising Justice Tunya’s impact on the institution and the country at large.

She said his passing had left behind a legacy that would continue to inspire judicial officers and legal practitioners committed to upholding justice.

“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him during his distinguished judicial career,” Koome said.

Omondi Tunya Distinguished Judicial Career Mourned

As per the Judiciary, Justice Tunya was a judge who, throughout his tenure, demonstrated commitment to upholding justice in a timely manner and strict adherence to the rule of law.

He served at various levels in the Judiciary and therefore made considerable contributions to the justice system of Kenya.

“Justice Tunya devoted many years of dedicated service to the administration of justice in Kenya. He began his judicial career as a Magistrate before his elevation to the High Court, where he served with distinction, diligence, and an unwavering commitment to the fair and timely administration of justice,” the Judiciary stated.

The Judiciary further noted that through his faithful service, the retired judge played a meaningful role in advancing justice and strengthening confidence in Kenya’s legal institutions.

His work, it said, reflected the values expected of judicial officers entrusted with safeguarding the Constitution and protecting the rights of citizens.

“Through his faithful service, he contributed significantly to strengthening the rule of law and advancing the cause of justice in our country,” the Judiciary added.

Judiciary Supports Family in Grief

With sympathy continuing to flow in from all quarters, the Judiciary assured everyone that the judiciary is with the family of the deceased in their hour of grief.

While recognizing the grief caused by this loss, it urged the grieving family members to draw on the memory and legacy of the retiring judge.

“As the Judiciary mourns the passing of one of its former Judges, we stand with his family during this trying time. We pray that they may find strength, comfort and solace in the cherished memories of his life and in the lasting legacy of his dedicated service to the people of Kenya,” Koome said.

Having served as a magistrate and having reached the High Court Bench, he joins a long list of judicial officers whose work set the stage for more reforms to make it easier for people to get justice and improve the reputation of the court in the eyes of the public.

“May the Almighty grant the late (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya eternal rest, and may his soul rest in everlasting peace,” Judiciary concluded.
