KAA Responds to Claims Linking Adani Group to JKIA Project

Share

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has firmly denied reports alleging that India’s Adani Group is involved in the modernisation and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a press statement issued on March 3, 2026, Acting Managing Director and CEO Dr. Mohamud Gedi clarified that the Privately Initiated Proposal (PIP) previously associated with the Adani Group was formally cancelled.

He emphasized that there are currently no discussions between KAA and the conglomerate, nor any of its affiliates, concerning the airport’s redevelopment.

The Authority stated that the cancellation of the proposal effectively ended any potential engagement with the Adani Group regarding JKIA.

The clarification follows media reports suggesting the Indian conglomerate could still be linked to the multi-billion-shilling infrastructure project.

Privately Initiated Proposals are mechanisms that allow private entities to submit project ideas for consideration under Kenya’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework.

However, KAA’s latest communication makes clear that JKIA’s upgrade is no longer being pursued under such an arrangement with Adani.

Government-Funded Expansion

According to KAA, the modernisation and expansion of JKIA is now fully funded by the Government of Kenya and is being implemented in line with established public-sector policies and procedures.

The project is part of broader efforts to enhance JKIA’s capacity and competitiveness as East Africa’s leading aviation hub.

Industry reports have previously highlighted the need to expand passenger terminals, improve cargo facilities, and modernise airside infrastructure to meet growing regional and international demand.

Commitment to Transparency

KAA maintained its committed to transparency and accountability, pledging to keep stakeholders and the public informed about key developments.

The Authority’s clarification comes amid heightened public scrutiny over large-scale infrastructure projects and foreign investment in strategic national assets.

JKIA remains Kenya’s primary international gateway, playing a critical role in tourism, trade, and regional connectivity.
