Kalonzo Demands Immediate Reversal of Fuel Price Hike as Transport Crisis Deepens

Share

Former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has demanded the immediate reversal of the recent fuel price hike affecting thousands of Kenyans across the country.

In a statement dated May 18, 2026, Kalonzo said the situation currently being experienced across the country is a result of bad fuel pricing policies.

“Today, hundreds of thousands of our fellow Kenyans workers, students, traders, and mothers are stranded across the length and breadth of this nation. This is not a natural disaster,” read part of the statement.

He accused the administration of President William Ruto of making decisions that have worsened the cost of living and strained ordinary Kenyans.

Kalonzo Says Fuel Price Jump Has Triggered Nationwide Transport Disruption

Kalonzo cited the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announcement on May 14, 2026, which raised diesel by Ksh 46.29 per litre and super petrol by Ksh 16.65 per litre.

He argued that the sharp increase was implemented without consultation and has placed an unbearable burden on transport operators, leading to widespread strike action across the country.

According to him, the resulting strike is a “foreseeable consequence” of what he termed as reckless economic decisions.

The Wiper Party leader said the transport disruption has left workers, students, traders, and families stranded in different parts of the country.

He warned that the crisis is already affecting supply chains, pushing up food prices, and slowing down business activity in major towns, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Naivasha.

Kalonzo Issues Call for Fuel Price Reversal Amid Nationwide Strike

As a result, Kalonzo called for the immediate reversal of the fuel price hike, arguing that it is necessary to restore stability in the transport sector.

He also urged President William Ruto to engage in urgent dialogue with transport stakeholders to resolve the ongoing strike.

“President Ruto must direct his administration to open genuine and immediate dialogue with the Transport Sector Alliance. Their grievances are real, their members are suffering and stonewalling them is not governance; it is negligence. The United Alternative Government stands ready to facilitate this process today,” read part of the statement.

In addition, he demanded a clear and transparent fuel pricing framework to protect ordinary Kenyans from further economic hardship.

Kalonzo further criticized the government for failing to engage transport operators before implementing the fuel price adjustments, saying dialogue is necessary to avoid further disruption.

He stressed that continued silence and inaction would deepen the crisis and worsen the cost of living for millions of Kenyans.
