The Australia government has warned its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution when traveling to Kenya due to terrorism threats, violent crime, and ongoing transport-related protests in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
In a travel advisory updated on May 18, 2026, Australia said demonstrations linked to the transport sector could disrupt movement and turn violent.
“There are ongoing transport-related protests in Nairobi and other areas. Limit travel to essential movement only. Avoid crowds, monitor local media for the latest updates, and follow advice from local authorities,” the Australian High Commission in Kenya said in a statement shared on X.
Australia’s Smart Traveller advisory, last updated on March 12, 2026, urged travelers to remain alert while visiting Kenya.
“We continue to advise exercising a high degree of caution in Kenya due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime. Higher levels apply in some areas,” the advisory stated.
The government also warned travelers about possible demonstrations and protests that could quickly become violent.
According to the advisory, travelers should remain vigilant in crowded places, public transport areas, shopping centers, hotels, and places frequented by foreigners.

Australia also cautioned citizens about the ongoing rainy season in Kenya, saying heavy rainfall could lead to severe floods and major disruptions.
“Heavy rainfall during the rainy season can cause severe floods, resulting in casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to telecommunications, power, water and transport,” the advisory noted.
Several parts of Kenya have recently experienced flooding following continued heavy rains, affecting roads and transport networks.

The Australian government further reminded citizens traveling to Kenya that they must apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before entering the country.
Authorities advised travelers to regularly monitor official government updates and local news while in Kenya.
