KRA Addresses Viral Job Letters Demanding Ksh 4,500 From Applicants

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has raised an alarm over a fake appointment letter asking job seekers to pay Ksh 4,500 before they can complete recruitment, warning that no payment is required to secure a position at the tax agency.

The warning targets a purported employment offer informing applicants that they had been selected to work at KRA. Recipients are then asked to send money to a mobile number listed under the name Recruitment Officer.

Fake Offer Lists Several Charges

According to the circulating letter, the Ksh 4,500 would cover recruitment processing, a staff identification card, medical clearance, employment documentation, training and placement.

“The payment will cater for: Recruitment processing fee, Staff identification card, Medical clearance, Employment documentation, Training and placement,” the fake notice states.

It presents payment as a mandatory step before successful applicants can complete their recruitment, a claim KRA has rejected.

KRA said it does not charge applicants at any stage of recruitment, including when they apply, are shortlisted, interviewed or receive an offer.

Its recruitment fraud notice also warns that fake job schemes can be used to extort money or obtain personal information for criminal activities.

This is not the first time KRA has dealt with fraudulent job offers. The authority previously issued a public notice after detecting fake recruitment messages circulated through different media platforms.

KRA Explains How Genuine Applications Work

KRA said genuine vacancies are posted through its official careers platform and other authorized channels.

Its current application guidelines direct candidates to register through KRA’s e-recruitment system, create an applicant profile and access available positions under Employment Opportunities.

Applicants then select a vacancy and submit their applications through the system.

KRA’s careers page currently carries a standing notice that it does not charge any recruitment fee.

Job seekers can check vacancies through kra.go.ke/careers and should verify any recruitment communication before sharing personal details or sending money.
