KURA Issues Traffic Alert as Over 10 Nairobi Estates Face Major Disruption

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a temporary partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, August 8, 2026, a move expected to disrupt traffic along one of Nairobi’s busiest corridors.

The disruption will take place between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., and motorists should expect slowed movement and occasional stoppages as crews actively carry out the operation under controlled conditions.

“Motorists are informed of a partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, 8th August 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to facilitate removal of a gantry at the location indicated in the attached sketch. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” KURA stated.

As a result, motorists using Outer Ring Road are urged to plan their journeys early, especially given the road’s critical role in connecting eastern Nairobi to key highways and commercial hubs.

According to KURA, contractors will focus on a section near the Airport North Road interchange, where they will execute the works within the scheduled three-hour window.

Affected Areas Along Outer Ring Road

Consequently, the partial closure will affect several estates that depend heavily on Outer Ring Road for daily commuting and access to essential services.

These include Huruma, Mlango Kubwa, Kiamaiko, Kariobangi North, Kariobangi South, Dandora, Buru Buru, and Umoja 1.

In addition, Umoja 2, Umoja Inner Core, Tena, Donholm, Pipeline, and Embakasi will also experience delays, as residents in these areas rely on the corridor as a primary transport route.

Traffic Management Plan

Meanwhile, KURA will manage traffic in phases to reduce disruption while maintaining safety standards.

From 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., crews will position machinery as vehicles continue moving, albeit at reduced speeds.

However, authorities will fully close the affected section between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to allow for the safe removal of the gantry.

Thereafter, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., contractors will clear the site and reopen the road, although motorists will still need to maintain controlled speeds.

In the meantime, KURA has directed motorists to follow instructions from traffic police and marshals stationed at the site.

Additionally, drivers should consider alternative routes wherever possible to avoid congestion and minimize delays during the operation.
