Major Changes at AU Commission as New Chief of Staff Is Appointed

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed Yann Bedzigui as the new Chief of Staff.
The appointment comes as the AU Commission continues to strengthen its leadership team under the new administration led by Youssouf, who officially assumed office in March 2025 after being elected Chairperson during the African Union summit in Addis Ababa.
Yann Bedzigui is an experienced scholar and policy expert.
He holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from Université Panthéon-Assas. He has also written several publications focusing on:
- African Union peace and security policy
- Conflict prevention
- Regional dynamics in Africa
His experience is expected to strengthen the Commission’s work in promoting stability, cooperation, and regional integration across Africa.
Supporting the AU Chairperson’s Agenda
In his new role, Bedzigui will assist the Chairperson in coordinating work across departments and advancing the Commission’s strategic priorities.
The AU Commission highlighted his strong academic background and professional experience as key strengths for the position.

Tribute to Outgoing Chief of Staff
The AU Chairperson also paid tribute to the outgoing Chief of Staff, Ambassador Souef Mohamed El-Amine, for his service and commitment to the Commission.
Ambassador Souef was appointed Chief of Staff in March 2025 after previously serving as the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia and Head of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

In a statement, the Chairperson said, “The Chairperson expresses profound appreciation and gratitude to the outgoing Chief of Staff, Ambassador Souef Mohamed El-Amine, for his dedicated service, steadfast commitment, and valuable contributions to the work of the Commission during his tenure.”
He further praised the outgoing official’s leadership and professionalism, wishing him success in his future endeavors.
“We commend his professionalism and leadership and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”
