African Union Condemns Houthi Attacks on Oil Tankers in Red Sea

The African Union Commission (AU) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssof condemns attacks claimed by Yemen’s Houthi movement against commercial oil tankers in the Red Sea.
According to a statement by the AU dated July 23, 2026, Mahmoud warns that the incidents threaten regional stability, international maritime security and global trade.
In the statement, Mahmoud criticized the attacks that followed the Houthis ‘ announcement of a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, describing the actions as dangerous.
“These actions represent a dangerous escalation with serious implications for regional peace and security. The Chairperson expresses the full solidarity of the African Union with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reaffirms the Union’s unwavering support for the security, sovereignty, and stability of the Kingdom,” read the statement.
AU’s Solidarity With Saudi Arabia
He expressed the AU’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed its unwavering support for the security, stability and sovereignty of the kingdom.
“The African Union stands in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reaffirms its unwavering support for the security, sovereignty and stability of the Kingdom,” the statement said.

The chairperson said that freedom of navigation and the safety of commercial shipping must be respected in accordance to international law.
The statement further said that the security of maritime routes is of importance to Africa and any disruption risks undermining regional maritime connectivity, global supply chains and energy security.
Call To The Houthis
He therefore called on the Houthis to immediately cease all attacks against commercial shipping, refrain from actions that could further heighten tensions and fully comply with international law governing maritime navigation.

Mahmoud also reiterated AU’s support for regional and international initiatives which are aimed at de-escalating the conflict and safeguarding maritime security while offering a resolution to the crisis.
The AU said it remains committed to supporting efforts that promote lasting peace, security and stability in the Red Sea region and the wider Middle East.
