Sifuna Alleges Safaricom Shut Down Linda Mwananchi Paybill ‘On Orders From Above’

Sifuna Cries Foul After Linda Mwananchi Campaign Fundraising Paybill Is Suspended

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has accused Safaricom of suspending the M-Pesa Paybill used by the Linda Mwananchi movement to collect public contributions.

Sifuna made the claim on Thursday, July 23, 2026, shortly after the campaign reported raising hundreds of thousands of shillings from Kenyans through small donations.

“@SafaricomPLC wamefunga paybill ya mwananchi after ‘orders from above,’” Sifuna posted.

The senator did not identify who allegedly issued the orders or provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the suspension.

Linda Mwananchi Raises over Ksh500,000 Through Paybill Account

The development comes just days after Sifuna launched a public fundraising drive for Linda Mwananchi.

On July 22, the campaign reported receiving Ksh519,144 from 9,419 contributors. The donations ranged from as little as Ksh1 to a maximum of Ksh5,000, with the average contribution standing at Ksh55.

The campaign collected the funds through Paybill number 3033049.

“Tangu Senator @edwinsifuna achape show asubuhi, Kenyans of goodwill have done the thing!! Ahsanteni sana,” Linda Mwananchi said in a post celebrating the public response.

The fundraising drive was based on Sifuna’s appeal for Kenyans to contribute whatever amount they could afford to support the movement.

Sifuna Calls for Citizen-Funded Politics

Sifuna has presented the fundraising campaign as an alternative to political movements that depend on wealthy individuals and large donors.

While announcing the Paybill, the senator urged Kenyans to send small contributions, including Ksh10, to support Linda Mwananchi activities.

“Paybill ni 3033049. Utaona E. Sifuna hapo. Mnitumie hizo ma-10 bob, nitatangaza ni pesa ngapi,” Sifuna said during a radio interview.

The campaign said the contributions would help support its mobilisation and other operational activities.

The movement has also said it is working to build a citizen-led political platform ahead of the 2027 General Election

Kenyans React to Account Suspension

The reported suspension of the Paybill sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media.

Some users questioned the purpose of the fundraising drive and alleged that the movement was being funded or directed by wealthy individuals.

Kiprotich questioned why the public was being asked to contribute,“Paybill?? What for yet you are being funded and directed by Billionaire?”

Goldfield said Kenyans could contribute through alternative channels, while also calling for a boycott of Safaricom.

“Omwami, we will contribute directly to your bank account or your phone number. Time to boycott Safaricom. They sold Albert Ojwang to DCI before he was murdered.”

Other users reported experiencing difficulties when trying to make payments through Paybill.

Otuoma Isaac directly asked Safaricom to clarify the reported problem.

“Oya @Safaricom_Care, why are we experiencing technical issues with Paybill payments? We’re unable to make payments through the Paybill option. Kindly look into this and let us know what’s happening.”

He added, “You cannot stop an idea when its time is right. #SisiNdioSifuna.”

However, not all reactions supported Sifuna’s position.

Byron claimed that the Paybill had been closed because the fundraising campaign allegedly failed to comply with Safaricom’s laws and terms and conditions.

“Senator Edwin W. Sifuna’s side hustle has been shut down. Safaricom has closed Sifuna’s omba omba Paybill for not following laws and terms and conditions.”

He added,“Sharp Boy haamini. I warned him yesterday.”
