Massive Fire Erupts at Nairobi Building Near Afya Centre, Several Feared Trapped

A fire broke out at Lotus House, a commercial building next to Afya Centre in Nairobi, on Monday, prompting a major emergency response amid reports that several people may be trapped inside.

Videos and images seen by HiviLeo.co.ke showed thick smoke billowing from the building as crowds gathered outside while emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Firefighters and other rescue agencies are carrying out rescue operations as they work to contain the blaze and evacuate anyone trapped inside the building.

The number of people trapped or injured has not been officially confirmed.

Unknown Cause Of Fire

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities are expected to launch investigations after the blaze is brought under control to establish what sparked the incident.

The fire outbreak caused temporary traffic disruption along the busy Tom Mboya street as crowds gathered to watch the incident.

There was initial concerns that the fire could possibly spread to the nearest petrol station that is near Afya Centre.

Lotus House primarily houses small commercial offices, private business agencies and retail spaces. Its first floor has historically been occupied by private corporate offices and company suites.

Major Fire Outbreaks In Nairobi

This incident adds to a series of major fire outbreaks that have hit Nairobi county in recent months raising concerns over fire safety standards.

In July, a massive fire destroyed multiple businesses in the Southlands area of Lang’ata prompting a multi agency response with authorities launching an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Earlier in June another major fire swept through Gikomba market destroying property worth millions of shillings with traders counting loses.

The incident reignited concerns over recurring fires at the country’s largest open-air market, with calls for improved safety measures and faster emergency response.

Authorities are yet to issue a statement on the Lotus House fire and also communicate on how many were trapped in the building and those affected.
