Nairobi is set to hold the 2029 World Athletics Championships after winning bids against London, Rome and Munich in a highly competitive selection process.
The 2029 World Athletics Championships will mark the first time the prestigious global competition is held on African soil, giving the continent a historic opportunity to host the sport’s biggest event.
World Athletics has also awarded the 2031 edition to Munich, Germany, while Nairobi’s successful bid highlights Kenya’s rich athletics heritage and its enduring influence on the global track and field stage.
The decision was announced by World Athletics during its selection process, with Nairobi emerging ahead of rival bids from London, Rome and Munich to secure the hosting rights for the 2029 edition.
Kenya’s Athletes
The award marks a significant milestone for Kenya, a country widely recognised for producing some of the world’s greatest middle and long-distance runners, and reflects growing confidence in its ability to stage major international sporting events.
Preparations for the championships are expected to include the continued upgrading of key sporting infrastructure, including Talanta Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi.
